A large number of people enter the photography industry each year. To compete effectively a photographer needs a smooth running operation which is seldom held up from glitches or disorganization. The following are a few simple tips which a photographer can follow to help his business run smoother.

1. Delete images from the camera rather than from the computer. There are a couple of good reasons for this suggestion. First, modern cameras are especially efficient and can easily delete 4 gigs of information in less than 3 seconds. Second, keeping the images in the card up to the very last minute before the card is to be used again gives a photographer some insurance against hard drive failures. If a hard drive does fail and for some reason a backup was not made, the photographer may be able to retrieve the photos off of the card if the card had not yet been reused.

Add easily removed stickers to cards that are ready for use. One time waster which most photographers find themselves doing is checking cards to make sure the pictures on this card can be deleted. To keep yourself and your staff from doing this, add an easy to remove sticker to the card. Train yourself and your staff to add it after the images have been downloaded and backed up. Remove the sticker right before it enters the camera. In this way, it is easy to know which cards needed to be downloaded and which can be used.

3. Add the due date for completion of photo editing on the folder in which the images for a session are downloaded. For example, if your client’s name is Smith, the session was shot on 06/06/09 and you promise your clients that images will be ready within 2 weeks, name the folder containing the images Smith062009. In this way, everyone on your team, at a glance will know exactly when these images must be completed.
